At least six people were shot dead Tuesday night inside a Walmart in Chesapeake, Virginia, in an attack that unfolded within an hour of the store's scheduled closing time, city officials said early Wednesday.

At the University of Virginia in Charlottesville -- which is about 170 miles west of Chesapeake -- a 22-year-old student allegedly opened fire on fellow students this month, killing three of them on a bus returning to campus from a field trip to Washington, DC.


Last weekend, a 22-year-old shot and killed five people at an LGBTQ nightclub in Colorado Springs, Colorado, and 19 others were injured, authorities said. 

A disgruntled Walmart employee opened fire Tuesday night at a Virginia store, killing at least six people before taking his own life, police said.


The shooting at the Walmart Supercenter was reported to police at 10:12 p.m., Chesapeake Police Department Chief Mark Solesky told reporters at a Wednesday morning news conference.

The FBI said in a statement it was providing assistance to the Chesapeake Police Department. The federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives in Washington said it was also responding to the shooting.

The store in Chesapeake was busy just before the shooting Tuesday night with people stocking up ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday, a shopper told a local TV station.Officer Leo Kosinski couldn’t say how the shooter died but said that he didn’t believe police fired shots. It was not clear who the shooter was or what their motive might be.

The shooting came three days after a person opened fire at a gay nightclub in Colorado, killing five people and wounding 17. Earlier in the year, the country was shaken by the deaths of 21 when a gunman stormed an elementary school in Uvalde, Texas.

Officers arrived two minutes later and entered the store two minutes after that, at 10:16 p.m., Solesky said. Police declared the scene safe a little over an hour later.
