The tragic death of a 13-year-old boy from Ohio, US, has been reported after he overdosed on over-the-counter medication while attempting the dangerous 'Benadryl Challenge' on social media platform TikTok. The challenge encourages viewers to take large doses of the antihistamine to induce hallucinations, and has been gaining popularity since 2020 as teens have uploaded their attempts to gain social media clout.
The boy, identified as Jacob Stevens, reportedly consumed 12 to 14 pills of the over-the-counter antihistamine to induce hallucinations while at home with friends. A video shot by his friends showed that the teen reportedly started to seize up after attempting the social media challenge. Jacob was subsequently rushed to the hospital and put on a ventilator, but tragically passed away six days later despite the best efforts of medical professionals.
Jacob's father, Justin Stevens, has spoken out about the devastating loss, describing it as the worst day of his life. He explained that his son was a well-mannered, funny, and loving child, and he is urging other parents to be aware of the dangers of social media challenges like the 'Benadryl Challenge'. Jacob's grandmother has also expressed her determination to prevent other children from going through the same ordeal.
The 'Benadryl Challenge' has previously been linked to the death of a 15-year-old girl who fatally overdosed on the allergy drug during another ill-fated attempt at the stunt. Following the spate of deaths, manufacturer Johnson & Johnson issued a public advisory warning about the challenge, and the Food and Drug Administration put out a public service announcement.
