In a statement posted to Alley’s Twitter on Monday night, her family shared that the actress, known for her performances in Look Who’s Talking, Veronica‘s Closet and Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, had died of cancer.
“She was surrounded by her closest family and fought with great strength, leaving us with a certainty of her never-ending joy of living and whatever adventures lie ahead,” the statement said. “As iconic as she was on screen, she was an even more amazing mother and grandmother.”
The former Cheers star's death was announced on Monday by her children True, 30, and Lily, 28, as they shared she fought a brief battle with cancer before passing at age 71.
Right after her death was announced, the phrase began to emerge from many users on Twitter, who were actually quoting Alley's own condolence Tweet to Stephen Hawking.
Alley posted a self-contradictory tweet last weekend, writing:
Cheers actress Kirstie Alley got into a heated political exchange about wealth in America with a former Democratic adviser on Twitter.
Alley, 68, responded to Peter Daou, who has worked with top Democrats including Hillary Clinton John Kerry, and most recently, Bernie Sanders, after he posted a tweet questioning why any one person should ever have $1 billion in personal wealth.
Kirstie Alley is furious that President Trump has been permanently banned from Twitter. However, her Twitter rant comparing the suspension to slavery resulted in a wave of backlash.
On Saturday, Alley shared several tweets slamming tech companies over their decision to silence Trump.
